Why Your Body Holds Onto Water

Why Your Body Holds Onto Water?

Ever looked in the mirror and felt like your body looks completely different from the day before? Your stomach may feel fuller. Your rings might feel tighter. Your face can look a little puffier, or your legs may feel heavier.

Sometimes, the change isn't body fat at all.

It can simply be fluid.

Your body is constantly regulating water and sodium to maintain the right fluid balance. This is essential for healthy blood pressure, circulation and the normal function of your cells. When that balance temporarily shifts, you may notice changes in how your body looks and feels.

So, why does your body hold onto water?

01 — Sodium

One of the common reasons for temporary fluid retention is a higher intake of sodium.

Your body regulates sodium and water together to maintain the right concentration of fluids in your body. After eating a particularly salty meal, your body may temporarily retain more water, which can contribute to feelings of puffiness or swelling.

02 — Hormonal changes

Hormones can influence the way your body regulates fluid.

Changes throughout the menstrual cycle, as well as hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause, can be associated with temporary changes in fluid retention.

This is one reason your body can look or feel different at different points throughout the month — even when your usual diet and lifestyle haven't significantly changed.

03 — Sitting or standing for too long

Your daily routine can also play a part.

Spending long periods sitting or standing in the same position can contribute to swelling, particularly around the feet, ankles and legs.

Gentle movement, such as walking, can support healthy circulation and normal lymphatic flow.

Regular movement is an important part of keeping fluid moving throughout the body.

04 — Your hydration levels

It might sound strange, but hydration and fluid balance are closely connected.

When you're dehydrated, your body has mechanisms that help conserve water. A hormone called vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH), signals the kidneys to reduce the amount of water lost through urine.

This is why maintaining normal hydration is more useful than drastically increasing or restricting your water intake based on how your body looks on a particular day.

05 — Your lifestyle

Travel, changes in your routine, physical activity, diet and digestion can all contribute to short-term changes in your weight and how your body feels.

Your body isn't static.

Your appearance can naturally fluctuate from morning to evening and from one day to the next.

Water retention isn't the same as fat gain

This is an important distinction.

A sudden change on the scale or a temporarily softer, fuller appearance doesn't automatically mean you've gained body fat.

Fluid, food, digestion and other normal fluctuations can all contribute to short-term changes in body weight and appearance.

That's why it's more useful to look at your body over time rather than judging it from a single day.

Where does BLD come in?

At Sculptaé, Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage is an aesthetic, hands-on treatment focused on the body's contours and the overall feeling of lightness and relaxation.

Our approach combines rhythmic and sculpting movements to create a treatment experience designed to leave you feeling lighter, less puffy and more defined.

These effects are aesthetic and can be temporary. BLD should not be confused with medical treatment for lymphoedema or other causes of oedema.

If you experience persistent, unexplained or significant swelling, it's important to have this assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional. Oedema can have a number of underlying causes, including certain medications and conditions affecting circulation, the heart, kidneys or liver.

For everyday fluctuations in how your body looks and feels, BLD can be part of a wider body-care and wellness routine.

Your body changes. That doesn't mean something is wrong.

Some days you'll feel lighter.

Some days you'll feel more bloated.

Some days your waist will look more defined, and others it won't.

That's normal.

Understanding your body means recognising that not every change is fat, and not every fluctuation needs fixing.

At Sculptaé, we believe body care should be about understanding your body — not fighting it.
